Nawelle Aïnèche

What is the starting point of this project?
When I came across my grandmother's VHS tapes, I did not recognize the little girl who looked just like me and whom she had filmed. At that moment, I realize that I have dissociative amnesia* from my childhood.

What is its specific feature?
Its hybrid nature. The sculptures, made from woven strips of cassette and VHS tapes, are noisy and dazzling, yet at times also soothing. It is through these constraints that we develop movement.

Why participate in the Danse élargie competition?
To create a new space in which material can dance. So that memories can come to life on this mythical stage, I seek to shed light on traumatic amnesia in order to question the narratives that perpetuate violence.

*survival mechanism triggered by memory during traumatic events, involving the repression or compartmentalization of memories.

Nawelle Aïnèche is a cross-disciplinary artist who trained in stage costume design in Lyon and weaving in Dakar. From 2021 to 2025, she is supported by Les Subs for her performances ENTRE (2022) and OUTSIDE (2025). She is working on her next project EXIT for 2028 explores the materiality of the CD.
